About Institute

About Our Campus

The beginnings of Amrita University can be traced to 1994 when a School of Engineering was started in an obscure village named Ettimadai, at the foothills of Bouluvanpatty ranges of the Western Ghats in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.

At that time there were 120 students and 13 faculty members. Today, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has five campuses in three different states of India. There is a student population of over 12,000 and faculty strength of nearly 1500. Over 120 UG, PG and doctoral programs are offered.

When Amrita became a university in January 2003, it was the youngest group of institutions to be conferred this status. As Amrita's first campus, Coimbatore is home to the administrative headquarters of Amrita University.

Schools of Engineering and Business in addition to Departments of Social Work and Communication are located on located on this campus. Research centers include AMBE, CEN, CES and Cybersecurity. The campus has nearly 3500 students and about 600 faculty and staff members.

This sprawling 400-acre campus is often likened to an oasis in a desert. Massive tree-planting and forestation activities undertaken over the past decade have converted the once-barren land into a lush green and beautiful place.

A lot of emphasis is placed on eco-friendly and conservation practices. Waste water from the hostels and faculty and staff quarters is treated using EM; no chemicals are used in the process. Organic fertilizers are made using vermi-compost, pesticides have been avoided since the very beginning. The tranquil surroundings, away from the pollution and the bustle of city life, are home to several exotic birds, including parrots and peacocks.

Placement Services

The Directorate for Corporate and International Relations (CIR) assists with the placement of students. It also provides specialized training to supplement their academic curriculum.

Nearly all major companies in India visit Amrita University for student placements. These include multinational companies as well as Indian companies with a global footprint. Companies from other countries, especially from the Middle East, also recruit students from Amrita.

CIR offices are located on all three campuses. Experienced teams of counselors and training officers assists with student training, campus placements and corporate relations at each campus. The Coimbatore office is headed by Prof. C. Parameswaran, Director of Corporate and International Relations.

Recruitment

Our Chancellor AmmaRecent placement statistics indicate over 90% placement for engineering graduates from all three Schools. In keeping with business and industry trends in India, the largest numbers of job offers are made by the IT firms. Several engineering companies also recruit students; and at Amrita, we actively encourage students to consider pursuing careers in the core engineering fields as well.

Amrita alumni hold leading positions in companies of international reckoning. A large number of employers return year after year to recruit from Amrita. They narrate with pride the significant contributions made by our graduates in their respective fields. And they talk about the positive influence of their personal behavior on their colleagues.

Corporate India has begun taking notice of the value-based education students receive at Amrita. This may be the primary reason why employers recruit in such large numbers, year after year, from Amrita. Indeed, employers vie with each other for early recruitment slots. During the placement season, the Coimbatore office serves as the focal point where students from all three campuses assemble for campus placements.

Student Training

Our Chancellor AmmaCIR provides training to students to help prepare them for the recruitment process. Classes are conducted in aptitude skills training, including logical reasoning and problem solving.

Emphasis is also placed on the development of good communication skills. Students have a chance to practice through mock interviews and group discussions. Frequent tests are administered to simulate corporate testing processes, so when the students finally come face-to-face with the rigorous testing process of employers, there are no surprises.

The training not only helps students land their dream jobs but also facilitates the development of their overall personalities. In addition, classes for Japanese Language Levels 3 & 4 are conducted for those students desirous of working internationally. Amrita is a certified Japanese Language Training Institution. German Language classes are conducted to enable students to acquire the A1 certificate in German, issued by the Max Mueller Bhavan.

Joining CIR

CIR invites applicationsfrom qualified, experienced and highly motivated individuals for the followingpositions at its Coimbatore campus.

1. Soft Skills Trainers
2. Aptitude Trainers
3. Spoken / Verbal Communication Trainers

Salary not a constraint for the right candidate.

CorporateRelations

CIR has fostered thedevelopment of excellent relationships with senior officials of corporations, including IT and core industry leaders and government undertakings.

These relationships have led to numerous faculty development programs, colloquiums, seminars, and consultancy opportunities for Amrita.

Many corporations have provided sponsorships when national and internationalconferences are conducted at Amrita.

Our industry partners have also facilitated students' workshops and providedopportunities for in-plant training, internships and projects, both in Indiaand abroad.

They have participated in curriculum development, which has also led to theintroduction of industry-specific elective subjects.

Faculty from around the World

Amrita FacultyInspired by Amma's vision to create a world-class research and teaching university in India, in the past few years, many eminent academicians from around the world have joined Amrita full-time to pursue their careers here. These include not only people of Indian origin but also several people from the West.

All three Schools have seen a phenomenon of "brain-gain" vs. the more conventional "brain-drain", where-in highly qualified people from the West have moved back to India inspired by Amma's vision for building top centers for learning in India.

In addition, as part of the distinguished lecture series, professors from top universities in the West have taught classes at Amrita in several areas. Amrita University may be the only institution in the country to have so much access to talent from abroad.

Research and Teaching

In keeping with Chancellor Amma’s vision for university research initiatives, several faculty members are engaged in research projects -- they have chosen such projects that have the potential to help make a positive impact in people’s lives. Funding for these projects is received from international collaborators and Indian Government agencies.

Several faculty members who possess masters degrees are currently enrolled in Amrita as part-time PhD students; the senior faculty provide guidance for their dissertation. Faculty members who are PhD students are given full support. When their thesis nears completion, they are even eligible for leave with full pay.
